eBook: Dracula by Bram Stoker

March 1, 2026|In General

Dracula was first published in 1897 and has remained in print ever since.

Beyond the power of the book, the 1922 silent film Nosferatu showed the ability of the concept to thrill us on the screen. Then the 1924 stage play expanded on our conception of the character, and the 1931 Universal movie starring Bela Lugosi ensured that Dracula would continue as part of our pop culture all the way up to our time. Over the years, much has been added to what Bram Stoker put to paper.

What we have in the book, though, retains all its excitement today, and shows us why we continue to be fascinated.

For the cover, I did my research to see what’s been done before for design, and I found a number of amazing ideas and tropes to steer clear from. In fact, Dracula has been well mined and it’s hard to come up with something original. After my read of the novel, I thought going back to one of Stoker’s main sources – the true Vladislaus Dracula – was a good way to avoid the obvious associations with the cinema versions led by Lugosi, Christopher Lee and others. Stoker used the Romanian/Transylvanian setting to convey a sense of fear and dread in a superstitious, isolated region. This showed a core idea of Stoker’s Dracula before the mythos expanded.

In addition to the novel, the posthumously published 1914 short-story collection Dracula’s Guest is included. It contains the lead story that lends its title to the book, plus eight non-Dracula short stories that had been published elsewhere.
