eBook: Lost Horizon by James Hilton
I’ve seen the movie with Ronald Colman probably a dozen times by now. Its central theme of exploring a way of living different to the Western capitalist life always appeals.
The main character Hugh Conway (Robert in the film) is a British consul and military man and is scarred by his experiences in the First World War, and Hilton uses him to examine the turbulent interwar period of the 1930s. Conway is a man looking for healing and peace. He and the other Western characters are stranded high up in the Tibet mountains. They find a culture very much unlike their own and they examine their choices and assumptions about life through the framework of Eastern philosophy.
There are two editions available in ebook formats. Both are identical except for the covers. The first is one of my own illustrations and the other is the 1937 movie poster updated to include Hilton’s name.
