Green Lantern No. 74 Cover by Gil Kane
At the end of the first era of the Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Gil Kane – the series’ first artist – had gone from a reserved, unremarkable style to a bold, dynamic style informed by his mastery of structural anatomy.
This cover for Green Lantern No. 74, January 1970 shows strong, simple design and the confidence Kane would display for the rest of his career.
Only two issues later, with No. 76 and the introduction of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow team by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams, the Bronze Age in American comics would begin.
Kane would return to Green Lantern in the coming years, retaining his connection to his signature character.
As published.
A scan out of Showcase Green Lantern No. 4 shows that there’s been some wonky redrawing along the left side of the art and on Sinestro’s right foot, and the borders have been tightened all around. I made a high-res scan of the published cover to facilitate redrawing the details accurately.
After art reconstruction and clean up.
Rebuilt trade dress – logos, lettering and type – combined with the lineart.
Homage to the original colour scheme.
A new colour version.
