Marvel & DC Present The Uncanny X-Men & The New Teen Titans
With X-Men and The New Teen Titans being the hottest team books from Marvel and DC, the news that the latest DC-Marvel crossover was going to feature them was greeted with anticipation by the super-hero comic reading community in 1982.
The creative team was two thirds of what had elevated the X-Men to superstar status: writer Chris Claremont and inker Terry Austin. Fitting in perfectly, Walter Simonson pencilled the book and editor Louise Jones (by coincidence Simonson’s spouse) oversaw the book’s creation. Liaising for DC was New Teen Titans editor Len Wein, who had also co-created the New X-Men with Dave Cockrum a few years earlier.
The DC-Marvel crossovers alternated production offices, and this one was produced at Marvel, so it’s not a surprise that the book reads more as a Marvel book with DC guest stars. Still, the story is big, the art is fantastic and it fulfilled its purpose by being a success with readers.
A shout out to Raymond Low of the Walt Simonson Appreciation Society group on facebook. His extraction of the lineart from the published book made this new colour version by me possible. And respect to Glynis Oliver for doing the colouring on the original book. She did a solid job, and in doing this different take that’s all it is. Different.
