While this one is from 1963, it has all the markings of a 1950s sci-fi B picture. The stoic and resolute man faces his doom while his girl seeks shelter and comfort in his arms, unable to summon the strength to look at what he sees. Others scurry about, knowing the end is nigh. The threat: astronomical in origin and size.
Black hole sun
Won’t you come
And wash away the rain?
– Chris Cornell
When I first saw this cover by Murphy Anderson a while back, I immediately connected it to Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and its amazing depiction of a black hole. It was tempting to think of adapting that effect here, but instead I went with something that suits the era of the art while still being a bit dazzling. And living where I do, a cold winter’s day isn’t something that requires a lot of imagination to render.
