Sword of Sorcery No. 2 Cover by Chaykin & Wrightson
The adventures of Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser continue in Sword of Sorcery No. 2, cover dated May 1973. Howard Chaykin also continues as the interior artist, and pencils the cover with Bernie Wrightson inking it to good effect.
Chaykin was one of a new group of artists – along with Wrightson, Jones, Kaluta, Windsor-Smith, Simonson, Starlin, etc. – whose influence would only increase as they gained experience. Whatever polish Chaykin lacked in his earliest pro art here, he’d continue to get work and develop his skills, quickly becoming one of the best page designers and dynamic figure artists of his generation. That would be in evidence only a few years later with Dominic Fortune and other work for Marvel Comics.
