The Scorpion No. 1 Cover by Howard Victor Chaykin
The prototype for Howard Chaykin’s Dominic Fortune was an Atlas Comics character that only lasted two issues.
The Atlas line was a few years before I started collecting regularly, so I read these after seeing Chaykin’s work at Marvel, Heavy Metal and with Byron Preiss. They’re enjoyable, but Dominic Fortune was a better book, and Chaykin would continue to evolve and polish his rogue-ish leads until they peaked with American Flagg.
