First published in 1972, Cyborg by Martin Caidin chronicled the story of astronaut and test pilot Steve Austin who crashes during a flight and suffers catastrophic injuries. Drawing upon the emerging science of bionics, Caidin has Austin rebuilt with mechanical parts that give him superior physical abilities. He’s soon tasked as an operative working for a shadowy agency in the US government.
The next year, the novel was adapted as a 90-minute television movie titled The Six Million Dollar Man starring Lee Majors. More TV movies were produced before it was given a weekly one-hour show. A couple of years later, The Bionic Woman starring Lindsay Wagner was spun off.
By the end of the 1970s, the bionic shows had run their course and were cancelled, but with the shows having a large youth audience, they were heavily licensed with lunch boxes, games, toys and, of course, comic books.
Most of the Charlton Comics cover art for both books is scanned and available on the web and rather than do a bunch of separate posts, you’ve stumbled upon a mega post with new colouring and packaging by me.
May we all be able to run in slow motion one day.
