Time Warp No. 1 Cover by Michael Wm Kaluta

June 12, 2022|In Comics, DC, Sci Fi

It was this comic from the summer of 1979 with my 14th birthday approaching that sent me over the edge. As my paperboy income increased, my comic book buying increased. DC was on the move again having recovered from the Implosion of two years earlier and their penchant for exploration and trying things out was at the forefront once again.

This comic was one of the last I’d buy straight off a rack in a convenience store. By fall, I’d go to the grimy old newsstand downtown because they had the best comic selection in town and they were happy to hold the comics I wanted. Less than a year later the town’s comic shop would open up and all the benefits of the direct market arrived in that corner of BC.

Time Warp No. 1 was a piece of magic from the stunning cover illustration by Michael Wm Kaluta to how it was packaged and the book’s theme. With SF on the rise in movies and TV in the late 70s, its return to an anthology comic had wow factor for me. While the book would only last for five bimonthly issues (plus the remaining inventory stories used for a short Mystery in Space revival and in other anthology books), it’s one of the few books that I allow to have a nostalgic hold upon me.

New colour and packaging by me.
