Time Warp No. 3 Cover by Michael Wm Kaluta
It’s taken me some time to find a way to get the lineart for this issue. A clean scan of the original ink art isn’t possible as it was hand coloured after being shot for publication.
A fallback method that can be used is to make a CMYK scan of the original comic and drop the CMY channels, leaving you a K (Black) channel that can be recovered and restored. For this one, that left a lot of halftone dots on the crashed spaceship in the background that would have been a muddy mess to work with. So that was out.
What did work was DC’s own cover for their aborted Time Warp collection. After looking for a few years, a larger scan of it appeared on the web and I was able to extract the lineart from that.
It was immediately a happy and bittersweet thing knowing I could finish off this series that got me collecting regularly in 1979. There are no more new Time Warp covers. All done.
This issue was also notable for being the professional debut of writers Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn. “On the Day of His Return” was a three-page story illustrated by Steve Ditko.
